Abstract: In the paper the main radiation properties, schemes and simulations of laser-electron X-ray generators (LEXG) based on the Thomson scattering of short (~10 ps) optical laser pulses by bunches of ultra-relativistic electron circulating in a storage ring are considered. A realistic model of the interaction of the laser and electron beams is presented, which takes into account their spatial shape, laser radiation polarization as well as the momentum and energy spread of the electrons circulating in the storage ring. In the paper a possible design of LEXG is discussed and for a chosen set of the LEXG parameters a simulation of the X-ray propagation through an X-ray beamline designed for the X-ray microanalysis is carried out. Possible applications of LEXG in the medicine and other areas of science and technology are discussed.
