Abstract: The article provides an overview of various approaches to determining the fundamental physical limitations of antenna characteristics, such as the quality factor, the width of the working frequency range, and gain related to physical dimensions. The history of the theory of electrically small antennas is considered, starting with the classic works of Willer, in which the concept of electrically small antennas was introduced, and Chu, who stated the direction of the study of the fundamental limitations for many of the following authors for decades. The paper compares various approaches to the derivation of the limitation expressions for the gain, G, quality factor, Q and their ratio, G/Q, based on the proposed by Chu approach – Spherical Modes Expansion (SME). The final exact limitation ratios are given, the assumptions and approximations used in the derivation are analyzed, and the associated limitations of applicability are formulated. In conclusion, the current state of the problem and the most promising topics for further research are given.
